Exciting news from recent birdwatching adventures in Azerbaijan! Another group of international birders, namely Erik Hirschfeld, Lars-Göte Nilsson, and Teet Sirotkin, made a remarkable sighting: a pair of Red-rumped Swallows, unexpected spring migrants. These distinctive birds are often overlooked, with only about 10 recorded sightings, the most recent being noted during the Beshbarmag Migration Counts last autumn.
On April 27th, along the coastal area of Lankaran, right on the very edge of the Western Palearctic border with Iran, the group stumbled upon not one, but two Red-rumped Swallows. This sighting contributes to the handful number of spring records and broadens our understanding of the species’ distribution in Azerbaijan. As observers noted, the pair potentially was breeding in the area, which adds even more excitement!
