Day trip – Candy Cane Mountains + Altiagaj National Park

Candy Cane Mountains

On the highway between Baku and Guba, an extraordinary sight suddenly rises from the landscape—a series of red-and-white striped peaks known as the Candy Cane Mountains. Part of the majestic Greater Caucasus mountain range, these formations earned their whimsical nickname thanks to their striking resemblance to the iconic Christmas treat.

The mesmerizing stripes are a result of unique geological processes. The mountains are composed of shale, a sedimentary rock made of thin layers stacked over time. Millions of years ago, shifts in environmental conditions caused variations in mineral composition as sediment accumulated, creating the dramatic color bands visible today.

For fossil enthusiasts, the Candy Cane Mountains offer another thrill—they are an excellent spot for belemnite fossil hunting, providing a hands-on connection to ancient marine life.

Altiagaj National Park

Nestled in the Khizi and Siyazan regions, Altiaghaj National Park spans 11,035 hectares of pristine wilderness in the eastern Greater Caucasus Mountains, just 120 km from Baku. This spectacular park is a haven of broad-leaved forests, where towering Caucasian oak, Oriental beech, and European hornbeam create a lush canopy filled with natural beauty and tranquility.

Wildlife enthusiasts will be thrilled by the chance to encounter the East Caucasian tur, an agile mountain goat-antelope found only in these rugged peaks. The park is also home to an impressive array of mammals, including lynx, brown bears, wild boar, wolves, golden jackals, red foxes, and roe deer.

Chukars can be found in Khizi mountains

For bird lovers, Altiaghaj offers a paradise of raptors and passerines, making it a rewarding destination for birding adventures. The journey itself is part of the magic—the scenic road to Altiaghaj winds through the stunningly colorful Khizi Mountains, offering breathtaking views of striped landscapes and rich geological wonders.
