Day trip – Gizilagaj National Park

Located 260 km south of Baku, this nearly 100,000-hectare protected area by the Caspian Sea is one of Azerbaijan’s top birding destinations. With its mix of wetlands, reedbeds, sandy beaches, and shallow lagoons, it hosts millions of birds from October to May, offering a constantly changing avian spectacle throughout the year. Recognized for its importance, the site was added to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance in 1975.

Key Bird Species
Look out for Black Francolin, Terek Sandpiper, White-tailed Lapwing, Caspian Stonechat, Black-headed Penduline Tit, Shikra, Long-tailed Tit, and a variety of terns and waders.

Tour Plan

Begin your day with an early departure, stopping for birdwatching at Mahmudchala Lake, where the tranquil waters offer great opportunities for spotting a variety of species. We will then continue to Gizilagaj National Park, and upon arrival at Liman settlement, explore Lesser Bay (Kichik Korfez), home to a diverse range of birdlife.

Afterwards, we will enjoy a packed lunch at the park’s entrance before taking a relaxing stroll through the bushes, searching for unique species like the Black-headed Penduline Tit and Black Francolin.

Next, we will head to the Caspian Sea coast, where we will observe waders, ducks, gulls, and terns in their natural habitat. The tour continues with a visit to the nearby forests of Hirkan National Park, where we will look for subspecies of Great Spotted Woodpecker, Long-tailed Tit, and with some luck, we might spot the elusive Shikra.

We will conclude the trip with a scenic drive back to Baku, arriving in the evening, enriched by a day of birdwatching and exploration.
